SOFTWARE
Some
programmes are the 'building blocks' of a computer system -
allowing access to files, documents, email and the Internet.
These are invariably loaded onto your computer when you purchase
it but if not can be loaded quite easily via the CD Rom driver.
(see the Computer section)
Other
programmes can be also acquired as a CD Rom or can be downloaded
(often free) from the Web. These fall into several categories
and cover most any subject you could ever think of.
The
software available covers a vast range of programmes from the
written word to bookkeeping, accountancy and even desktop publishing.
There are interactive tutorials, information, encyclopaedias
and much more. These all serve a positive function and have
transformed the way we work or learn.
The
popularity of the home PC has seen a wealth of software packages
on just about any subject to do with editing or manipulation
both for the amateur and professional alike - some programmes
are simple to follow and operate and some require more advanced
technological skills.
For
the keen photographer, this kind of software is an open sesame
to a world of fun and creativity, for business or pleasure -
there is very little that cannot be done to your photograph
or image. You can create special effects, montages and web sites,
slide shows, catalogues and albums or make cards, calendars
and invitations. You can cut, crop, colour and even completely
change your pictures - who says the camera never lies! Whatever
you want to do, there is a software programme out there that
can help you achieve it - and if there isn't it probably won't
be long before there is!
This
is for pure relaxation, but having seen some of the games on
offer, it seems that relaxation is not what the manufacturers
had in mind! Some of these advanced games require the stealth
and cunning of a fox and the speed, agility and concentration
of an Olympic athlete - but all these programmes are designed
specifically for fun.
You
can add as many software programmes as you need or want to your
computer but be aware that each one will take up space on your
hard drive - some being more memory hungry than others!
